Foundation of EID

EID was established on 8th of June 1983, and was the first R&D company ever created in Portugal, under the sponsorship of the Portuguese government.

This new company was built around a team of skilled, young electronics and telecommunications engineers. The early work of these pioneers proved instrumental in developing the enduring and valued relationship with the Portuguese Armed Forces enjoyed today.

Launch of BRASS

The Broadcast, Ship-Shore and Maritime Rear Link System, or BRASS, is widely implemented in NATO Nations to provide naval forces with strategic radio communications and other services. The system connects national shore stations in order to cover different areas, allowing NATO to satisfy its need for a complete naval radio communications infrastructure.

Compact Digital Intercom System that provides voice and data communications among crew members of armoured vehicles.

In general terms what was EID like?

(...) It mixed the experience of a group of older people with a majority of very young colleagues. The company was organized into small groups for development, 6-10 people, focused on specific product lines; there was also a design area and another for prototype assembly, which supported these development groups.

In 1983, EID was a young, dynamic company, where everyone addressed each other casually.
The love for the company was the most important thing. EID was the "apple of our eyes" for all of us at that time. (...)

How many people worked with you?

When I arrived at EID, I was placed next to the executives board, we were two secretaries, I joined as an intern and we supported all the departments of the company.

When I joined the company I've started in a room with about twenty people.

After working in the telephone development area, I became head of the small-capacity switchboard development area; both had 6-10 people.

Today the company's responsibility and work pace are much higher.

What do you miss the most?

I miss the family spirit with my colleagues with whom I shared the feelings of working towards a common goal. I also miss some old traditions.

The irreverence of many and the spirit of cooperation of all.

I miss working with background music We got together to buy a cassette recorder and there was always soft background music, which stimulated us and helped us to work… and contributed to conversations in a lower tone of voice.

The difficult days at the company when we were working hard until very late in the evening.

The company's difficulties in selling the products.

From heated discussions into the night (some even without dinner) until the early hours (including nights when you went home just for personal hygiene) because that morning we had the clients with us to come up with solutions.

What's your biggest pride?

Having had the ability to transform the company from prototypes to current/future productions, carrying out internal and external projects in parallel, never missing the commitments assumed with customers.

We managed to evolve from a small development company to a company with great development, production and commercialization capacity and with international relevance.

Tell us an unforgettable episode!

In a first meeting of the Board of Directors, where I was assisting as secretary, the nerves were such that throughout the meeting the hiccups did not stop. Cmdr Pires de Matos and the other administrators laughed. I left, went to drink water and came back but the hiccups continued... I never forgot this episode.

It was epic a situation where a newly hired colleague was testing a prototype and someone placed a tube underneath and blew some smoke, looking like the prototype was on fire...
The camaraderie between everyone (engineers, technicians, designers) was unsurpassed!

3 8P DTMF Telephones were made and completed for a public tender in England (BABT), these telephones were delivered to the Centrel AEP manufacturing unit in Corroios on Friday morning, they were due to be delivered to Lisbon Airport at 10 am for dispatch. It was 9 o'clock in the morning, we received a call saying that the phones were lost. Centrel AEP lost that tender.
